On my last trip to Hong Kong, I stayed at one of the airport hotels and I found out that it is possible to take the bus from Hong Kong Airport to Hong Kong Disneyland. In the past I have always taken the MTR train to the park (whether it be from Hong Kong Island or from Tung Chung Station which is close to the airport) so I was interested to see how easy this bus journey would be especially as I have barely used the bus in Hong Kong on my previous visits. It turns out the journey is incredibly easy and as I always do, I have taken photos so you can also see how simple it is.

The bus journey to Hong Kong Disneyland including one transfer takes thirty to forty minutes and the cost varies depending on which bus you take from Hong Kong Airport. If there are only one or two of you, it is one of the cheapest options to get there. However if you have a lot of luggage, are staying at one of the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort hotels or if there are three or more of you, getting a taxi or an Uber could be easier, cheaper as well as quicker – an Uber takes just under twenty minutes and costs approximately HK$130 (£12.70 / US$16.70) with a taxi only costing a few dollars more.

As I was staying at one of the airport hotels and just visiting the park by myself for the day, taking the bus was the easiest option – the cheapest option would have been to take the S1 bus to Tung Chung (HK$3.5) and get the MTR to Sunny Bay and then transfer to the Disneyland Resort Line (HK$14.7). I have used this route to get to Hong Kong Disneyland frequently but it can take longer as the S1 bus travels all around the airport before it goes to Tung Chung.

From the arrivals hall at Hong Kong Airport, follow the signs saying “To City” and then “Bus” which will lead you outside to the airport bus station located at street level.

Just before the doors to leave the terminal building, there is an large display with information for all of the bus routes from the airport as well as a screen listing the next departures and the different fares for each of the buses.

All buses with an “A” or “E” prefix leaving Hong Kong Airport will stop at Lantau Link Toll Plaza where you will need to go to transfer to the R8 bus to Hong Kong Disneyland. My advice is to always pick an “A” bus over an “E” bus as although a little more expensive, they are quicker to get to Lantau Link Toll Plaza (they often only make one stop on the way) whereas the “E” buses take longer as most of them go via other airport areas and/or Tung Chung.

If you plan to use public transportation whilst in Hong Kong, I highly recommend buying an Octopus Card which can be used on the MTR, buses, ferries, minibuses and will cost HK$150 – HK$100 credit and HK$50 deposit. It can be bought when you arrive in Hong Kong at the Airport Express Customer Service Centre in the arrivals hall and you can return the Octopus Card at the end of your stay and get your HK$50 deposit and any remaining credit back or keep the card for your next visit.

If you do not have an Octopus Card, you can purchase bus tickets from the ticket office at the bus station or if you have the exact fare, directly from the bus driver.

The next bus that was departing the morning that I was there was the A11 which cost HK$40 (£3.90 / US$5.14) and I used my Octopus Card to pay – children under twelve and seniors aged over sixty five pay half the fare. There was a cheaper “A” bus leaving ten minutes later but on that day, I wanted to get to Hong Kong Disneyland as early as possible to be there in good time for park opening hence picking the next bus that was departing.

Also if you pay for your bus fare with an Octopus card, you can transfer at Lantau Link Toll Plaza onto the R8 bus to Hong Kong Disneyland for free if using buses A10, A11, A12, A20, A21, A22, A26 or A29.

The bus stops are clearly signposted (all signs and information are in both Cantonese and English) and on each bus, there is ample luggage space and if sitting upstairs on the bus, you will be able to see the luggage racks on the television screens so you will be able to see your bags no matter where you sit.

The journey from the airport to Lantau Link Toll Plaza takes fifteen minutes via a short stop at the Hong Kong Port Passenger Clearance Building where you go to get the bus to Macau. All stops on the bus are announced in both Cantonese and English so there is no need to worry about any language difficulties – this goes for the whole of Hong Kong too!

Once at Lantau Link Toll Plaza, you will need to use the underpass (I did see an elevator available) to get to the other side of the road. The R8 bus stop is the furthest one from the exit of the underpass and is clearly signposted. During the day, the R8 bus runs every 15-20 minutes.

I waited about ten minutes for the next R8 bus to arrive. My transfer was free as I had used my Octopus card on the A11 bus from Hong Kong Airport (the regular fare for the R8 bus is HK$7) and the journey to the Public Transport Interchange at Hong Kong Disneyland took seven minutes including a short stop at Inspiration Lake. If you can, sit upstairs at the front of the bus to see the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort sign as the bus drives underneath it.

The Public Transport Interchange is located just behind the Disneyland Resort MTR station so if you are heading straight to the park entrance then the walk will take less than five minutes.

If you are going to the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel, Disney Explorer’s Lodge or Disney’s Hollywood Hotel, you will need to take a free hotel shuttle bus which all leave from the Public Transport Interchange.

And another tip that I’ve posted before is to not take your photo at the first Hong Kong Disneyland sign that you see as it is always crowded. If you walk past the Surfing Mickey fountain located at the park entrance towards the resort hotels, you will find another sign with no other people ever in sight!

Now you can see how easy it is to get from Hong Kong Airport to Hong Kong Disneyland by bus. Have fun at Hong Kong Disneyland – one of my most favourite places in the world!
