Disney Wonder Hawaii Cruise: Day Six – At Sea
On the sixth day of our Disney Wonder Hawaii cruise, the third part of our epic and long awaited trip began as it was the first of our five days at sea as we sailed across the Pacific Ocean towards Vancouver. After staying at Aulani followed by a busy few days sailing and sightseeing around the islands from Oahu to Maui, the Big Island and Kauai, a relaxing day of finally doing absolutely nothing was very welcome and very much needed.
As we had the first of our three time changes of the cruise overnight, I had no idea what time it was when I woke up that morning as I could not remember if I had changed the time on my phone the previous evening before I fell asleep. However a top tip is that the “Bridge Report” channel on the stateroom television will always show the correct time onboard the ship and it turned out to be 8:30am – definitely the latest we had slept the entire trip so far!

After a small breakfast in Cabanas, we walked around the ship and you could easily see how few children there were onboard as the AquaLab was completely empty whilst the Quiet Cove Pool area was packed – however we wondered if that would change in the next few days as we started to sail towards colder temperatures.

In the Lobby Atrium we met both Captain Minnie and Captain Mickey who were out on Deck 4 along with Stitch as well as the Princesses on Deck 3. There were no lines to meet any of them (on this cruise it was still not advertised which characters would be out at each time) but one of my favourite parts of a sea day is having absolutely no plans whatsoever and just wandering around the ship to see what happens and who we might meet.

Sitting and watching the world (and the sea) go by is one of my other favourite parts of a day at sea. We went up to Decks 9 and 10 to get a cup of tea and it was perfect weather outside with blue skies surrounding the ship.

At midday Captain Fabian made his daily announcement saying that we were now 340 nautical miles from Nawiliwili and sailing at a speed of 19.4 knots. We still had 2104 nautical miles to go until Vancouver and we would be arriving there at 7am on Monday 16th May. After he had finished talking the When You Wish Upon a Star horn sounded from the forward funnel.
We met Goofy who was out in the Pagoda on Deck 9 at 1:00pm before heading to Cabanas for lunch. That day there was a giant Antipasto station set up so that along with a plate of shrimp was complete food heaven for me. As it was such a nice day, we ate our lunch on one of the tables outside on Deck 9 by the family pool where we watched Goofy pick up the floor marker (the one that you stand on for socially distanced character photos) and use it as a tray whilst pretending to get drinks for everyone around the pool deck before bumping into one of the poles and having a argument with it. It was so funny and made for great entertainment whilst we were having our lunch.

Mickey took over from Goofy at the Pagoda at 1:30pm so after finishing our lunch and meeting him, we went back into Cabanas for dessert. The White Chocolate and Raspberry Pavlova and the Strawberry Cupcake both tasted like heaven and that as well as the view from the back of the Disney Wonder with Margaritaville and When Can I See You Again playing in the background was simply the best and brought back some very happy memories from past cruises.

We decided to have a lazy afternoon by the pool so we went back to our stateroom to get changed and collect our bags where we found some members of our “Towel Zoo” sitting on top of the drawers guarding one of our kukui nut leis as well as a plate of beautiful and delicious cookies that had been left for us.

The whole of the Quiet Cove area was very busy and there were no sun loungers or any of the comfortable chairs available outside the Cove Cafe – we found on this cruise that the same people would sit in these chairs first thing in the morning and not move out of them all day until dinner time. As I had still not been to the Cove Cafe yet, I got a Soy Latte when we saw two sun loungers next to the pool become free. It was a little windy out and the breeze did feel chilly at times but sitting in the blue skies and sunshine with a nice coffee in hand felt wonderful.
Despite the Quiet Cove being busy, the pool itself was empty (due to the movement and the roll on the ship it even became a wave pool at times) and we had it to ourselves for a while which was great fun. Just after 3:30pm nearly everyone went inside which we think was a combination of half of the Quiet Cove area going into the shade as well as the “Mega Jackpot Bingo” which was due to start in the Azure Lounge. We stayed where we were relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet as well as the sun and the beautiful weather as we knew the weather would turn cold and rainy in the next few days.

Just after 5:00pm we went back to our stateroom to enjoy a glass of wine whilst sitting out on our verandah. After having a shower and enjoying the view a little more, we went up to Deck 10 to watch one of the most incredible sunsets at sea I have ever seen in eight cruises. As it was Formal Night there was hardly anyone else around on the outside decks at this time as people were either having dinner, watching the Golden Mickeys in the Walt Disney Theatre or taking photos in front of the different backdrops in the Lobby Atrium.

Our dinner on Formal Night was the Land and Sea menu in Animator’s Palate and our server Caglar was back and feeling much better. To start I had the Marinated Shrimp with Feta Cheese (another one of the best appetisers I have ever eaten onboard) followed by the incredible South Indian Vegetable Biryani and the best Triple Chocolate Terrine ever for dessert. I did not think anything could better the Aloha Hawaii dinner menu from the evening before but this definitely did and (with the exception of Palo to come) it was my favourite meal of the cruise so far.

After dinner we walked along to the Lobby Atrium where we met Goofy, Minnie and Mickey who were all dressed in their best for Formal Night. Another thing that I noticed and loved (but I’m not sure if anyone else realised) is that the piano player that night was playing songs from the Aulani “Music of the Maka’ala” soundtrack which just made me smile. There were no lines for any of the characters and we also realised that we still had not had a single photo taken by any of the photographers onboard the ship – we had taken all of them ourselves with our own cameras or taken selfies using one of our iPhones.

As we were passing the White Caps shop on Deck 4, out of the corner of my eye I saw one of the white long sleeved Hawaii shirts (that had sold out immediately when the shops had opened a few days beforehand) on the shelf and amazingly it was in my size so I took it as a sign that I needed to get it – and I’m so glad that I did buy it as I did not see another one for the rest of the cruise.
One of the onboard activities that night was Star Gazing at 10:15pm which was hosted by one of the ships’ officers at the Wide World of Sports on Deck 10. We stayed and watched for a bit before getting an ice cream from Eye Scream and heading back to our stateroom where the amazing Yuthapong had left us two kangaroo towel animals to add to our growing menagerie which we both loved.

Despite how little we did on our first full day at sea onboard the Disney Wonder, it had been perfect and the best part was knowing that we still had another four sea days with so much to look forward to before we reached Canada.
