It feels like forever since I last wrote one of these blog posts but as I recently travelled to Rome for a short break, it felt only right to post another and hopefully more will follow soon now that the world is slowly opening up once again. We flew into Fiumicino Airport (also known as Leonardo da Vinci Airport) and one of the best, easiest, quickest and cheapest ways to get from Fiumicino Airport into Rome itself is to take the non-stop Leonardo Express train direct to Termini Station located in the centre of the city. Venice is one of the most beautiful and unique cities anywhere in the whole world. This city made up 118 islands and 400 bridges is a fairytale world like nowhere else on earth and somewhere you have to visit at least once in your lifetime. However Venice has become a victim of its own popularity and in recent years has suffered from massive overtourism. Visiting Venice when busy and crowded is not fun and you could very easily leave hating the city that you wanted to visit so much. (more…)

On our trip to Gibraltar at the end of last year, top of my list of things to do whilst we were there was to hike the Mediterranean Steps (also known as the Med Steps) to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar. The Rock of Gibraltar is the most famous landmark and attraction in Gibraltar and home to the famous Barbary macaques which are the only wild monkey population in Europe. (more…)

It had always been a dream of mine for many years to visit Neuschwanstein Castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein in German) located high above the village of Hohenschwangau in Bavaria in Germany close to the border with Austria. It is one of the most famous and popular sights in Germany and the fairytale castle was said to have been Walt Disney’s inspiration for Sleeping Beauty Castle. (more…)

On my recent road trip through Europe, I was looking for things to do during our short time in Switzerland when I discovered the Trümmelbach Falls in Lauterbrunnen close to where we staying in Interlaken. The Trümmelbach Falls (Trümmelbachfälle in German) are a series of ten waterfalls located inside a mountain which carry over twenty thousand litres of water per second from the glacier walls of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains down to the Lauterbrunnen Valley and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lake Bled in Slovenia is instantly recognisable and somewhere that had always been on my list of places to see for a long time.  No matter where you are in Lake Bled, you are guaranteed beautiful views and great photographs but if you want to get the picture postcard shot of the lake itself, you will have to make a little effort but it is completely worth it. This week I was lucky enough to visit the incredible city of Berlin for a couple of days for my first holiday away this year. Currently at the time of writing (August 2020), Berlin has two international airports  – Tegel Airport which is located five miles north west from the city centre and Schönefeld Airport which is located a little further away in the south. Over the years I have done many big road trips throughout the USA, Canada and Europe and they are one of my favourite ways to explore as they are the ultimate adventure and you can see so much that you would otherwise miss if you were just flying between cities. During this time I have also learnt so many things on each trip which has helped to make the next one we do even better. The day that we walked the Walls of Dubrovnik last year was pretty much a perfect day. Not only is the Old Town of Dubrovnik a beautiful and magical place but as we visited during the off-season, it was quiet and we pretty much had the walls to ourselves – it was exactly how you imagine and hope everywhere you visit could be. When you land at Vienna Airport in Austria, you are immediately confronted with advert after advert for the expensive City Airport Train to the centre of Vienna as soon as you enter the terminal. I am not joking when I say that you will see signs for the CAT train everywhere you look – there’s even luggage going around on the baggage reclaim belts advertising it whilst you are standing there! There is however another and much cheaper option to travel to the city centre which is not advertised anywhere at all – the S-Bahn. Even though the S-Bahn train makes several stops on route, it costs a fraction of the price. (more…)
